Braces are appliances that are attached to the teeth, culminating in a band that surrounds the rear molars. Years ago, bands were placed around every tooth, but brackets that were bonded to the teeth eventually supplanted this design. Due to their rigidity, braces are called fixed orthodontic appliances.

These brackets and bands all have slots that hold the wires in place. Each bracket and band has a specific prescription designed for that tooth, allowing the orthodontist to control each tooth in three dimensions—three planes of space—with the use of a wire.

Rectangular wires are used to level and align the individual arches of both the upper and the lower teeth. Patients can also wear elastics or rubber bands to coordinate the maxilla and the mandible.
